Crocus plants are relatively small, reaching just 3-6 inches in height (depending on the variety). The leaves are grass-like, generally with a light stripe running up the middle. Many of the spring-flowering crocus bulbs are among the earliest bloomers. The blooms pucker up at night and re-open in the morning.
Yellow Mammoth Crocus. There is nothing better after a long winter than to see the first crocus poking their heads through the soil. A terrific naturalizer, crocus may be planted en masse in lawns (that do not need early mowing), in rock gardens and as colorful drifts in early garden beds. Bloom time: Late March/early April. Plant 4″ deep and 3″ to 4″ apart.
