Weeping Blue Alaskan Cedar (Cupressus nootkatensis ‘Glauca Pendula’) is a weeping evergreen that holds long curtains of blue-green foliage from spreading horizontal branches, reaching 20 to 30 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide in zones 4 through 7. The leader nods, the side branches arch out, and the flat sprays hang straight down from them.
Compared with Green Arrow, the narrow weeping Alaskan cedar many people know, this cultivar is wider, bluer, and far more irregular. Green Arrow reads as a column. Glauca Pendula reads as a shaggy pyramid with an outline you can pick out from across the yard in silhouette, which is the point of planting one.
Give it a site with real width available and view it from a distance where the weeping habit registers. It is a strong choice near water features and at the edge of a lawn, and it holds up in cool, damp northern summers better than most conifers.
