Northern Herald Redbud (Cercis canadensis ‘Pink Trim’) is a cold-hardy eastern redbud that brings pink spring flowers to northern yards. It grows 15 to 20 feet tall and wide and thrives in zones 3 through 8, a full zone colder than the typical eastern redbud.
This selection comes from a mature redbud that grew for decades in central South Dakota, so it is built for long, hard winters. It also blooms heavily: in early spring, before the leaves open, clusters of pink, pea-like flowers line every bare branch. The heart-shaped leaves that follow are thicker and more leathery than the species, and they hold a clean green through summer before turning yellow in fall.
Plant Northern Herald as a specimen in the front yard or outside a window you pass every day, where the early flowers announce spring. Its dense, rounded crown fits small yards and sits well beside a patio or along a woodland edge, and a group of three makes a strong show. Allow 15 to 20 feet between trees.
The spring flowers are an early nectar source for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, and the tree grows at a moderate pace once it settles in.
