Boulevard Volunteer Clematis

Pert & Petite – Boulevard Volunteer Clematis

Layer in perennial flowers that spring to life each season. Sassy and sweet Boulevard Volunteer Clematis (Clematis ‘Volunteer’) adds a lively look to your landscape…no matter the size. Volunteer Clematis delivers star-shaped, geometric, iced pink flowers. Each lavender-pink sepal is accented with darker bands of color.

The sepals are perfectly pointed and surround a fluffy pom-pom of pale yellow stamens for added visual interest. Relish the abundant flowers from early summer through fall! This exquisite choice is one of the Boulevard series of modern Raymond Evison Clematis cultivars. They are known as Compact Patio Clematis, and for good reason.

Volunteer is a giving, free-flowering plant that keeps you happy. Butterflies and beneficial pollinators love the nectar-rich flowers, too.

Garden and Landscape Applications

Boulevard Volunteer Clematis is a versatile plant that can be trained to climb trellises or drape elegantly from containers and retaining walls! It’s perfect for adding vertical interest to small patios or creating privacy screens with lightweight pots and supports.

Use Volunteer as a groundcover to soften garden paths or to fill in space beneath mature shrubs. For a dramatic look, plant it at the top of retaining walls to cascade downward or along raised garden beds for a visually grounding effect.

This ornamental vine also makes an excellent addition to pollinator gardens, attracting butterflies with its nectar-rich blooms. Let your creativity shine by using tomato cages, obelisks, or DIY trellis systems to showcase its abundant flowers!

Clematis Care & Maintenance

Clematis are easy to grow and maintain! It’s worth taking the time to find the right spot. Plant with Nature Hills Root Booster for life-long, non-stop to help the root system access nutrients from the soil.

• Sunlight: Leaves thrive in full sun, while roots prefer partial shade. In hot climates (Zone 9), plant in the morning sun with afternoon shade.
• Soil: Requires well-drained soil that stays moist but not waterlogged. Consider using a planting mound or raised bed in poorly draining areas.
• Watering: Apply moderate, consistent water, and allow excess to drain. Mulch around the roots to maintain cool soil conditions.
• Pruning Group 3: Blooms on new wood, allowing for hard pruning each year. Trim dead growth back to live buds in early spring, leaving about six inches of healthy stems. Prune at a 45-degree angle.
• Low Maintenance: Clematis are easy to care for and long-lived!

Care and Maintenance

1. Watering: Maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods.
2. Fertilizing: Use Nature Hills Root Booster at planting for long-term soil support.
3. Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch mulch layer to keep roots cool and prevent water loss, but avoid direct contact with the crown.
4. Pruning: In early spring, cut back to live budding stems six inches above the ground.
5. Support: Use climbing support like trellises, tomato cages, or netting to guide its climbing growth.
