Montgomery Spruce

Overview & Description

The Montgomery Spruce (Picea pungens glauca Montgomery) is a dazzling dwarf conifer forming a naturally dense, rounded mound before gradually developing a graceful upright leader. Prized for its true steel-blue needles that intensify with age, this extremely slow-growing spruce adds unfading year-round colour without overwhelming small spaces. Its architectural form evolves from rounded to miniature tree over decades.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a dense, rounded to upright, and extremely slow-growing habit, adding just 2-4 inches yearly. It forms a compact, manageable tree, reaching about 4-6 feet tall in 10 years, with eventual mature size of 6-8 feet tall and 4-5 feet wide over 25+ years.

Additional Notes

Evergreen with vibrant steel-blue foliage year-round, intensifying with age. Exceptionally hardy to Zone 3 and drought-resilient once established, it thrives with minimal care. Its perfect proportions and true blue colour make it an outstanding choice for rock gardens, foundation plantings, conifer displays, or as a long-term architectural specimen providing reliable colour and structure for generations.
