Ruby Carousel Barberry

Overview & Description

The Ruby Carousel Barberry (Berberis thunbergii Bailone) is a compact, striking shrub known for its dark purple-red foliage that adds bold colour to any garden. Its upright, arching stems create an elegant rounded form, making it a standout in borders, hedges, or as a barrier plant. Small yellow flowers appear in spring, followed by showy red berries that persist into winter, providing year-round interest.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a dense, rounded, and compact growth habit. It forms a tidy, low-maintenance shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 3 to 4 feet in both height and spread.

Additional Notes

It blooms in mid-spring with yellow flowers, followed by red berries persisting into winter. Thriving in full sun to partial shade, it adapts to various soil conditions, tolerates drought and urban pollution, and is deer-resistant due to its thorny stems. Hardy to Zone 4. An outstanding choice for small spaces, mixed plantings, or as a dynamic focal point where dramatic foliage, year-round structure, and easy care are desired.
