A fine-textured compost for sowing seeds and rooting cuttings. The close contact around small seeds helps them take up moisture, while vermiculite holds water and keeps the mix open around delicate roots.
Fill a clean tray, level the surface, water and allow to drain before sowing. Cover seeds only as deeply as the seed variety requires and water gently with a fine rose. A propagator can help maintain humidity until germination.
Prepare a non-flowering shoot, remove the lower leaves and insert it firmly into moist compost. Keep warm and out of direct sun while rooting. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, lift them by a leaf and pot them on; avoid squeezing the stems.
